All London Art Fairs and Art Festivals: where and when to go, and what to see

When most people think of art fairs and London they think of Frieze London and Frieze Masters, however, there are a lot of other art fairs that happen in London. Not all of them are a frenzied affair that brings in the international jet setting crowd however if you are in London they are still very much worth visiting. 

 

JANUARY ART FAIRS

 

London Art Fair

The year always kicks with the London Art Fair, which traditionally launches the year in art. Quality wise the fair is considered to be somewhere between Affordable Art Fair and Frieze. It welcomes art collectors of all levels, offering the chance to buy quality, modern British art as well as contemporary work from today’s artists.

Art Rooms

Art Rooms aims at closing the gap between artists, curators, galleries and art buyers from around the world. Located in the rooms of a four star hotel in Regent’s Park the fairs shows unsigned independent artists, it is an interesting concept to kick start the London art fair calendar.

FEBRUARY ART FAIRS

 

Parallax Art Fair

Verdict: The very definition of low key. This is an international art fair where up-and-coming artists showcase their work at surprisingly reasonable prices, especially for Chelsea. There are lots of talented artists on display that you might not find elsewhere.

MARCH ART FAIRS

 

Affordable Art Fair

If you have a smaller budget than you’d like, pop down to the famous Affordable Art Fair in Battersea for the chance to nab a bargain (ish - prices range from £50 to £5,000). There will be prints, sculpture and photography on sale for all tastes, and excitingly, you can even bring your dog.

Talented Art Fair

A brand new art fair for a brand new year - the Talented Art Fair comes from the team behind the New Artist Fair and hopes to help visitors discover some of the most exciting talent in British art who are already well-established in their fields. Prices will range from £100 to £4,000.

Photo London

Photo London was created in 2015 to give London an international photography event befitting the city’s status as a global cultural capital. The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia

20/21 British Art Fair

The 20/21 British Art Fair is the only fair to specialise in modern and post-war art, but does feature work up to the present day. The fair is opened by a special guest each year, and offers one of the friendliest atmospheres you can find.

Frieze Art Fair and Frieze Masters

This is the main one! Most of the works shown at the fair are likely to disappear in some museum vault, or a warehouse in Switzerland. There is always a programme of great talks too, for those wanting to think and learn amid the sales.

Sluice Art Fair

Sluice Art Fair was founded by artist Karl England and art historian Ben Street in 2011 with the first iteration of the fair taking place in Mayfair at the same week as the Frieze Art Fair. Galleries included Transition Gallery, Fordham and Studio1.1. In 2013 the art fair moved to Bermondsey opposite White Cube and expanded to incorporate galleries from Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Southampton, Athens, Barcelona, and Brooklyn, New York.

The fair takes every 2 years.
