Event Details

To coincide with the final weekend of the critically-acclaimed exhibition ART + REVOLUTION IN HAITI, The Gallery of Everything presents a screening and talk with artist and curator Leah Gordon. This free event takes place from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 17th November.

A legendary advocate for Haitian art-makers, Gordon will discuss the powerful legacy of the Haitian renaissance and its impact on today’s contemporary artists in Haiti. Her talk is entitled: BETWEEN THE ALTAR, THE MUSEUM & THE MARKETPLACE.

The Gallery of Everything will also screen Gordon’s award-winning film THE SCULPTORS OF GRANDE RUE (2008), after which there will be a Q&A.

ABOUT THE TALK
BETWEEN THE ALTAR, THE MUSEUM & THE MARKETPLACE will examine the strong links between Vodou and art, and the contemporary appropriation of secular art for sacred spaces. As a curator in Haiti, the US and UK, Gordon will also discuss the role of image and artefact in Vodou, and the liminal space that contemporary Haitian artists inhabit - maintaining ancestral histories, whilst trying to negotiate a contemporary art market which has a conflicted relationship towards ethnographic and ritual objects.

ABOUT THE FILM
THE SCULPTORS OF GRANDE RUE (2008) is a multi-layered portrait of the contemporary art scene in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It depicts a community which is materially poor, yet culturally rich, and which, in and of itself, reflects the inescapable links between sex, death and creativity - as expressed through the Vodou spirits Gede.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Artist and curator Leah Gordon is one of Britain’s leading advocates for modern and contemporary Haitian art. She has produced a substantial body of work on the representational boundaries between art, religion, anthropology, post-colonialism and folk history. Her curatorial practice includes KAFOU(Nottingham Contemporary, 2012), THE GHETTO BIENNALE (Haiti, 2009-17) and POTOPRENS (Pioneer Works, 2018). Gordon’s film and photographic work has been exhibited internationally and includes: National Portrait Gallery, UK; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Dakar Biennale; and NSU, Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale. Her photography book KANAVAL: VODOU, POLITICS AND REVOLUTION ON THE STREETS OF HAITI was published in 2010.

ART + REVOLUTION IN HAITI

As part of its ongoing investigations into alternative art-makers of the 20th century, The Gallery of Everything invites you to experience ART + REVOLUTION IN HAITI.

This immersive exhibition recalls the moment in 1945 when Surrealism descended on a former slave colony - and rewrote not just history, but art history.

Highlights include rare early works by HECTOR HYPPOLITE, PHILOMÉ OBIN, WILSON BIGAUD and PRÉFÈTE DUFFAUT, and an assembly of cut-outs by metalworker GEORGES LIAUTAUD. Other elements on display include early drawings, paintings, sculptures and films.
