Event Details

In response to escalating concerns about the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), we will carry out Maria Mahfooz's solo exhibition online and offline in two parts: Exhibition & Private view (26th March – 2April) & Closing event (July, tbc). Please fill in the form (link https://forms.gle/13tnMF6NYV4vMcVZ9 or on LOA Gallery website) to RSVP both events before the 22 March**. You will receive a Private View Kit by post and a free ticket for the closing event. (Limited spots to 50 sign-ups) The private view kit will contain relevant texts, hand outs, instructions on how to join Maria online for the private view, amongst other surprises. We are taking the quarantine and public health seriously and we also understand that as a young artist, a cancellation of an exhibition may setback ones career beyond the financial stability. Your participation will set the spirit and allow the connectivities in challenging times like now. Join us as we make the move to an online opening! stay safe In her first solo exhibition, Maria Mahfooz takes the imagination of a third culture kid and projects it onto a post-net green screen, interrogating ideas of representation and constructions of the self, as well as exploring how she navigates herself both digitally and in real life as a contemporary Muslim woman. Taking herself as a point of reference and framing the work in the language of popular internet culture, Mahfooz focuses on the role she performs in the eyes of society: the contemporary brown muslim woman. Across four different acts, Mahfooz presents herself consecutively on a flight of stairs as an ‘other body’ to be viewed, hosts an indoor pool party (complete with Burkini), interviews herself in the fashion media’s format of 30 Qs and dad dances. Each work, by transforming the space digitally, wittily inviting the viewers to reflect on their own perceptions, fetishisation and assumptions about the group and playing with the imagined border between muslim and ‘western’ culture. Alongside the video works, Mahfooz is setting up LOA as a transformative space situated between the online and offline worlds, much like the space between two cultures Maria herself inhabits. The artist will open the exhibition with an international Skype call performance and will be present in the green-screened gallery throughout the exhibition, taking visitors to different parts of the world through the digital medium. Among the 140 proposals we received, Mahfooz’s work stood out because of her use of ingeniously placed humour in her snapshot-like video works. In addition, we were found genuine value in her casual approach of culture exchange delivered by the workshop series Mahfooz hosted with her creative partner Sara Gulamali, titled ‘ Two hijabs and one _____ (bed/pingpong table/final conga) at Tate exchange.
