Reading Group | The Drone Eats With Me

Join us for a special reading group inspired by the themes in our current exhibition When I see the future, I close my eyes by Heba Y. Amin. Together, we will read excerpts from The Drone Eats With Me. A Gaza Diary by Atef Abu Saif.

Saif’s diaries offer a unique perspective into life on the ground during the 2014 Gaza invasion. This reading connects to the exhibition as it investigates, through a personal lens, the aerial militancy in the Middle East and gives a civilian voice to life under drone warfare.

We read excerpts chronologically. We will read and discuss the excerpts together with no preparation required from participants. However, we highly recommend to read the whole book. You can get your copy in the Mosaic Rooms online bookshop.

Atef Abu Saif is a writer born in Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1973. He holds a BA from Birzeit University, an MA from the University of Bradford, and a PhD in political and social science from the European University Institute in Florence. He is the author of five novels: Suspended Life (2014) shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction; Shadows in the Memory (2007); The Tale of the Salty Grape of Paradise (2003, 2006); Snowball (2000); and Harvest Night (1999). He also published two collections of short stories: Still Life: Stories from Gaza Time (2013) and Everything is Normal (2004). He is a regular contributor to several Palestinian and Arabic newspapers and journals, and edits Seyast magazine, published by the Institute of Public Policy in Ramallah. In 2014 he edited the anthology The Book of Gaza: A City in Short Fiction, which featured ten short stories by ten different authors from the strip.
